(15,812 posts)Honestly it is an exciting feeling, isn't it? I can feel the excitement in your shots. I can also sense you creeping around, being quiet, and trying not to make noise or breathe hard.
Anyway I am enjoying your photos. Taking photos of birds or animals IN THE WILD is just tons of fun, and now I am experiencing it vicariously.

(60,014 posts)I find that hawks are skittish - they don't let you get too close - even the squeak of the back door opening can often drive them off. Was lucky this was so far into our woods.

(202 posts)We had 2 hawk hatchlings in our back yard last year. I tried to photograph them but never got any nice shots.

(3,829 posts)and you can see the strongly patterned wing. An adult Cooper's Hawk (which would also have similar red barring) would have plain gray wings. Plus an adult Cooper's Hawk would have a dark cap which would contrast somewhat with the rest of the head.
