(12,376 posts)Frank grew up in a dysfunctional family. My grandmother was a classic nutcase, abusive to her 9 kids. Frank got her permission to enlist in the Korean War. He was 17. During that time, he was given a field commission as 2nd. Lt. After the war, the commission was rescinded. "Ya need a college degree to be an officer. He hadn't finished high school.
He decided to make a career of the army. So between Korea and 1960, he earned a h.s. degree and enrolled in college. He finished both in night school. So from Korea to college, he went through every rank, from private to MSgt. (Hence the connection.)
He earned his commission and went to the rank of major. His time was about out when he was offered Lt. Col. if he would go to Viet Nam. He accepted, served and retired to open a feed store in Copperas Cove, Tx.
I'm proud of him.

(13,188 posts)My father joined the Army in 49 to be a mechanic, also without finishing HS. 17 years old
He was laterally transferred into the Air Force - The AF not having a draft option to fill the ranks had fallen short, so off he went to North Texas to learn reciprocating aircraft engines.
When the last piston engine plane was decommissioned he became an avionics technician
He retired in 1974. With a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering, but not as an officer, He was the original Polack MSgt in my family.
I did a more routine career path - Graduated HS, got a job, got laid off.
Joined the Air Force to learn a skill.
Turned out that I fit that life and did 24 years. Then I came out of a meeting one morning and just knew it was time to go. So I turned down a line number and dropped my package that afternoon.
15 + years later, here I am. Yelling on the internet
