(34,311 posts)that our Orchestra would do this. We had plans but I think that might have been right before Covid raised its ugly head and now I am retired.
Beethoven's 9th always makes me cry. No matter where or how good or bad (good is better of course) and because of that I had a very hard time playing it through but was always so very happy to have the opportunity. A monster of a piece, in the very best way. I am going to go watch this again and cry again but it is a happy cry, a cry because of beauty. We are all so fortunate to have music.

(34,311 posts)that cannot help but lift you up. The higher you go the harder it is to not just cry. There are so many beautiful works of art.
This one was in my very first piano book where they just gave you a one hand melody to play with some silly words and I still remember this one. Ahhhhhh music.

That said, the playing is very good.

(34,311 posts)Enough instrumentation and the music was written to be able to just play that perfect spot over and over with a few differences. It does not take the magic away just because we love to entertain!!

(68,544 posts)We played 80 shows a year for nearly 20 years, but still got together once a week to stay sharp & work on new material. We never played in January but got together 3x a week.
Organization & practice are the only way. There are no shortcuts

(34,311 posts)It does not even matter what kind of music you are playing. It all requires a good deal of time and rehearsal to do it well. It really does not matter if you have played something many times. It is always, always different.
I miss it so much but my health just cut me off at the knees. After 35 years with the symphony and all my life from the age of 7 I had to stop and it kills me to this day. 3 years now? Maybe 4 and if I cannot remember that Richard Strauss is not going to be my friend anymore!!

(68,544 posts)We played in Rockford. Big room, good money & we played there 2 or 3 times a year for about 15 years.
We got done, loaded up our 11,000# of gear, got paid, then drove 100 minutes home.
I drop the truck off at the secured lit, get a ride home with a bandmate, walked in the door and saw it was 4:15am.
I had a flight to Malaysia at 6pm. That same day!
I told myself "I can't do this anymore." I was 51 at the time, so I was no longer a young'un.
I've played a few jam nights since, & I still play piano, guitar, or both every day. But, I've been done performing since the New Year's Eve a few months after that "I'm done" moment.
Gladly, after 17 years, I don't miss it.
