David Peel & The Lower East Side. "Happy Mothers Day"

Released when I was in high school in the late '60s, the album "Have A Marijuana" was an underground favorite, if only for its mentions of abandon and pot. The cover alone sold it with an image of a pot plant. A New York A&P man for Elektra found them playing on the streets where the band appeared and signed them to a contract.

Probably the favored track they made that got attention was "Up Against The Wall, Motherfucker". It was a hit in the gymnasium canteen. LOL "Happy Mothers Day" was a close second as it speaks for the angst of family life felt by many youths.

The band was later discovered by John Lennon when they were playing their makeshift stage in Greenwich Village. He produced their next album "The Pope Smokes Dope" . The record was banned in many countries. David Peel went on to be a frequent guest on Howard Stern's show, because of course he would.

David Peel would just show up in Washington Square park with his guitar and play his favorite songs such as Have a Marijuana. You could only buy his records at the hippie head shops, mainstream record stores didn't carry them. The FUGS were another Greenwich Village favorite.

Good memories.
