David John Harman, known professionally as Dave Dee (17 December 1941 9 January 2009), was an English singer-songwriter, musician, A&R manager, fundraiser and businessman. He was the frontman for the 1960s pop band Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich.
Early life
Dave Dee was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, and attended Adcroft School of Building, Trowbridge. Upon leaving school he became a police cadet with the Wiltshire Constabulary. He was one of the first on the scene of the April 1960 car crash that resulted in the death of American rock and roll musician Eddie Cochran and serious injury to Gene Vincent. He later recounted that he started learning to play the guitar using Cochran's impounded Gretsch over several nights at the station.

Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich were a British pop/rock group of the 1960s. Two of their single releases sold in excess of one million copies each, and they reached number one in the UK Singles Chart with the second of them, "The Legend of Xanadu".
Five friends from Wiltshire, David John Harman (Dave Dee), Trevor Leonard Ward-Davies (Dozy), John Dymond (Beaky), Michael Wilson (Mick) and Ian Frederick Stephen Amey (Tich), formed a group in 1961, originally called Dave Dee and the Bostons. They soon gave up their jobs (e.g. Dave Dee was a policeman) to make their living from music. Apart from performing in the UK, they also occasionally played in Hamburg (Star-Club, Top Ten Club) and in Cologne (Storyville). Ward-Davies had acquired his nickname when he unwrapped a chocolate bar before absent-mindedly discarding the bar and attempting to eat the wrapper.

(9,292 posts)One of the few 1960s British pop groups that failed to make an impression over here. I honestly never heard of them til recently.

(57,867 posts)The Eddie Cochran anecdote was too much to ignore.
And good morning.

(9,170 posts)It's probably because they didn't tour in the US,for some reason. I do know that they told me they couldn't afford to shop on Carnaby Street, so perhaps some management types took advantage of them.

(9,170 posts)I met them in the Sixties in Germany and mostly chatted with Beaky until their manager told them "no girls." I actually didn't know who they were but a friend of mine told me they were famous. Then I asked them if they wanted my autograph and they asked me to sit with them. A very special memory...
