(34,566 posts)But it still sounds as if it coming from the future. Cant remember which clip they were commenting on.
This clip is from Rock Goes to College, and the whole concert is amazing, despite some nimrod throwing a beer at the band during Bye Bye Love.

(34,566 posts)But sad is that nearly everyone quoted in the book talked about what a good guy he was, and he worked with a lot of people over the years. I realize Joe may have decided to leave out some negative things, but it still is impressive. There were a few comments that hinted at some of the demons he struggled with and some statements that kind of left you hanging, such as that there were five half brothersbut no more info about them.
David Robinson said that Ben would walk into the recording studio holding a cup of coffee and with a cigarette dangling out of his mouth, then nail the vocal on one take.

(65,580 posts)It's said that the solo on Best Friend's Girl was one take, as well as the hammer and pull solo on Candy O.
Not that he didn't have it pretty well worked out before he showed up at the studio, but doing anything that memorable in one take is pretty cool.

(34,566 posts)That comes across in his instructional and other interviews.
He declined to be interviewed for Millikens book, unfortunately.
Have you seen the Candy O performance in France on YouTube? Bens vocal is great and Elliott leaves it all on the stage on his solo. Fun!

(65,580 posts)I've also got 3 of the live DVD's. One, i think, was a bootleg i got from someone who glommed onto it online.
I think Easton is the most underrated guitar player in rock history. Every trick in the book, singable solos, great fill work and the right tone for each song, without his tone being the same every song.
I really missed Ben at the RR HoF induction!
On Edit: One other thing. I used to make EVERY guitar student who got to the level of playing lead, learn the solo from Just What I Needed, note for note. There's so much to be learned on that, for the aspiring player, but it's not way over their head either.

(33,643 posts)of it's release, and the most replays on MTV ... another Ben Orr classic ...
Arguably their most emotionally impactful song as well ...
ProfessorGAC
(65,580 posts)But, i don't think it was their best work. And while i get your emotional impact thought, i was never all that nuts about the lyrics.

(34,566 posts)A different measure is how often their work has been played through the years and another is how much they have influenced others. I think they are outstanding on both.
Drive is not my favorite either. I like the ones that take the most advantage of each members abilities to create melodies and unusual sounds that somehow all work together.
I do like the lyrics to Drive (and appreciate how hard it is to sing well) and think part of their meaning gets overlooked. I interpret as: a man who loves a woman and who has been devoted a lot of time helping her with struggles, is surprised and hurt that she is discarding him not only as a lover but also as a friend.
