I am a big pre-code fan films made between 1929 to 1934 that showed strong women and didn't sugar things until the catholic Breen forced Hollywood to adhere to moral standards. Thes pious right wingers have always been with us.
My favorite movies : babyface, skyscraper souls, free soul, and goldie
Favorite stars Norma shearer, Warren William, Aline McMahon, Ann Harding

(16,984 posts)Some years back TCM ran a documentary called Complicated Women, which zeroed in on themes and stars of the pre-code era. It was quite the eye-opener.

(19,964 posts)Big fan of Joan Blondell and her pre-code films. Still haven't seen "Three on a Match" (with Blondell and Davis) or "Night Nurse" (with Blondell and Stanwyck).

(21,137 posts)Destroyed. The catholic league freaked out over this movie. It a movie set in Atlantic city during a convention. A rowdy picture that dealt with drunkenness, blackmail, lechery and ladies of the night.
Until the prints were destroyed the movie was shown at lodges and men's gathering. Finally under pressure from catholic group jack Warner pulled the film and destroyed it. Rumor has it in the pre-code fan community this lost film might turn up in some foreign country. I always check the Internet to see if it is found.

(6,251 posts)TCM is devoting the daylight hours to pre-code films, and is featuring a couple of specials as well. The first is Without Lying Down - Frances Marion and the Powerful Women in Hollywood, and the other is Complicated Women, mentioned by CBHagman.
Enjoy!
