(46,025 posts)In the Cascades, they have signs warning about these. If you are near a river or stream and see a white cloud moving rapidly toward you, you need to run perpendicular away from river. A large block of glacier ice has fallen upstream and caused a flood of snow, ice, water, rocks, and debris to rush down. Very dangerous when you are in the back country.

If we assume it is at 1/2 speed that means we're talking about 15 seconds to see whats going on, make the connection about how its going to impact you, and get out of the way. This is made more complex by the fact that this is both an atypical effect and one that is somewhat fascinating and interesting to watch. I think unless the train routinely plowed through that much snow on our station, most of us wouldn't have reacted any faster.
