That changed, but this type of movie still lags in acknowledgment.
I have not seen La La Land, dont know if it is good or stinks like many say.

(268 posts)I went into "Deadpool" not expecting much, and it was easily my favorite movie of the year. I'm not a comic book geek, but it totally won me over. I'm not surprised it got shut out; too entertaining.

(20,257 posts)Not really one of the biggies. Other than the acting awards and best picture, nominees are selected by professionals in the field - makeup people nominate for makeup, writers nominate writers.
Academy members are 94% white, 76% male, with an average age of 63. If you don't appeal to that demographic, it's an uphill battle.
Deadpool was an R rated fantasy/adventure film, that makes it a bit of a hard sell too.
