'Brain Dead' "scripted political parody-thriller-drama series" about Washington DC

'Good Wife' creators' latest: 'BrainDead' politics
Lorena Blas, USA TODAY Life 8:03 a.m. EDT June 13, 2016

One possible explanation for gridlock in Washington is about to be explored in prime-time television: an infestation of brain-eating bugs.

Mind-blowing concept? That's BrainDead. The 13-episode scripted political parody-thriller-drama series from Good Wife husband-and-wife creators Robert and Michelle King premieres on CBS Monday at 10 ET/PT.

<SNIP>

But it gets more complicated: Laurel, a documentary filmmaker, returns to Washington, D.C., to work for her brother (Danny Pino), a Democratic senator. She begins dating a staffer (Aaron Tveit) for Maryland's conservative Republican senator (Tony Shalhoub), amid a government shutdown that results from a political stalemate. More bad decisions follow, a result of a meteor that crashes on Earth, releasing bugs that appear to be eating the brains of senators and their staffers.

Going from the popular legal drama series Good Wife, which ended its seven-season run on CBS in May to a sci-fi political satire thriller might seem like risky move for the Kings, but for them, it's a no-brainer.

2. It's science fiction/fantasy - there doesn't have to any reality to it

They may be done that to prevent being accused of parodying a real senator. I mean satirists are having a problem finding absurdities that aren't solid truth. It could be the same for comedy writers.

Since it was from the producers of "The Good Wife" and I knew that it was about Washington, I assumed that it would be a standard political thriller. So I was surprised when it suddenly took such a weird turn partway through.

I enjoyed it and I'm going to continue watching it but I'm wondering how long they can sustain such a concept.

7. It's only scheduled for 13 episodes

So they only have to sustain it that long. That takes it through the beginning of September. I wonder if the results of the election might convince them to either try another run of episodes or to abandon the project as being too close to reality?

9. What I've read is that they are planning for the possibility of going longer than that.

They say that they're currently writing it so that it could end after 13 episodes or continue if it gets renewed. They say that they'd like to do up to 4 years if possible.
