Cans of 'parrot meat' in North Beach (SF) store window spark controversy

http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Cans-of-boiled-parrot-in-North-Beach-store-6579611.php

Stacked cans of "parrot meat" advertised for sale in the window of a soon-to-open store in San Francisco's North Beach have sparked a neighborhood controversy.

Local filmmaker and graphic designer Brady Baltezore says the cans are an art installment to create buzz for the store Terrific Street that he's opening with five friends, but a story on Hoodline reveals some neighbors feel the display makes a distasteful joke about the neighborhood's parrot population.

North Beach resident Julie Herrod told Hoodline the "canned parrot" was "the most disgusting thing I've ever seen in North Beach in the 25 years I've lived here."

Wild parrots are often perched on the trees dotting Telegraph Hill that rises above North Beach. These noisy, cherry-headed birds are beloved by locals and sought out by tourists. While several flocks now fly all over the city foraging for food, the original birds lived around the hill and parrots have become synonymous with the neighborhood.

"the most disgusting thing I've ever seen in North Beach in the 25 years I've lived here"?! North Beach is home to Beach Blanket Bingo, for cri-yi!

edit: They're ex-parrots! They're pinin' for the fjords!

It tastes a lot like California Condor. A bit gamy, but nice with a Cabernet JustABozoOnThisBus Oct 2015 #7

didn't get the joke. Perhaps large signs reading "JOKE AHEAD," "JOKE IMMINENT" and 'JOKE IS HERE" should be required.

What are you supposed to do with 'em after they have to be nailed on their perches?

leaving them their entire lives alone in tiny cages alone is ok.

that commutes from nearby Telegraph Hill to Cole Valley, up above the Haight-Ashbury. Cole Valley's most famous resident is Craig Newmark of Craigslist fame, who, as it happens, is a fairly serious bird enthusiast.

If you want a white, I'd go with a Greek Retsina. The essence of turpentine will balance nicely with the gaminess of the parrot.

Bon apetit!
