is the word midget now considered an insult?

I have to admit I used it the other day and than though, oh, I should not have said that I should have said short person. I think that it was an acceptable word most of my life but not now. i was talking about low ceilings and a house built for not tall people. Luckily, the guy i said it to was my age and did not flinch.

edited for typos.

hey, I have been retired for almost 15 years now, don't talk to many people anymore. Like I said, I am lucky I was talking to an equally old guy.

I have no idea how it popped into my head, except I think someone used it in reference to the low ceilings over 30 years ago.
I will certainly avoid using it in the future. I generally try to not use offensive words.

talking to a psychiatrist so I probably got judged on that. My bad. I guess I just never had occasion to talk about small persons since the 1970s when I was a child and the bad word was still in use. I certainly learned my lesson. I was mortified.

But I thought they were always deaf - hearing impaired to me are people who still have some hearing, like me, there are only certain keys I don't hear, so I mostly hear normally unless you fall on that key (G).
