(3,747 posts)I recently finished a couple of books discussing the Apollo program, and the more I learn the more insane I realize it is. These rockets contain an enormous amount of energy, and every flight is a risk. If you get on one, you have a heck of a lot of courage.

(58,773 posts)there were very nearly NO successful launches prior to Shepard's first flight into the borders of space. Numerous boosters had exploded on launch or otherwise crashed.
That took some intestinal fortitude. That's why all of the initial astronauts were test pilots. They were used to flying vehicles that hadn't been off the ground yet.
