The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI hate this commercial. It's ageist and degrading.
Basically it's for BURIAL INSURANCE.
Euphemistically called "final expenses".
The 'old guy' was trying to clean out the roof gutters and fell off the ladder.
His arm's in a sling.
He was trying to clean his gutters because of the pittance that many retirees have to live on. Couldn't afford to hire someone to do it.
(This is my take.)
The daughters are summoned and are all 'tsk tsk'.
Poor old dad is past it.
Then the pitch by one daughter.
"Acme Insurance has 'final expense' insurance that is VERY affordable'.
And one daughter says "We'll help you make the call".
Us geezers are not only incapable of deciding if we need or want 'final expense' insurance, we're not even able to make an unassisted phone call to the insurance company.
Guess who is not buying this 'insurance'?
Moi.

(3,908 posts)or Walgreens and the woman getting out of her pedicure chair and going across the street because she is "thrifty". I have mental list that I keep associated with products that have gone out of their way to insult my gender, age etc.

(15,824 posts)I have missed that one.
I was insulted by ageist marketing recently, but it was mailed to me. AARP, an organization I'm sure to never join, mailed me their application. It arrived on my birthday. I'm in my 40s, and not the late 40s. Bastards.

(3,908 posts)he is saying he is so smart because she called and got an insurance quote in 15 minutes and he also saves money by "not rewinding the DVDs". The commercial says you can get a quote in 7.5 minutes online and I assume they are saying that people who do that are smart.

(961 posts)although, I fall on the floor laughing at the "posting my vacation pictures to my wall" for some insurance commercial.

(38,958 posts)because of this guys suggestion. I too have decided to no longer rewind the Dvd's I rent. I think it will result in a huge savings and I am of the age group he is in.
Found it funny myself....

(21,925 posts)but having probably seen thousands upon thousands of commercials as a TV addict in my 64 years, I've never paid any attention at all to what it's about or trying to pitch. I think I'm mind-numbed and immune from following any commercial pitch by now and I only focus on certain weird or interesting aspects of commercials as opposed to their message. If it's the commercial I think you're referring to, the only thing that I focus on is the younger daughter who's kind of cute and has sort of an inscrutable look on her face over her dad's accident, somewhere between concern and mocking amusement.

(2,112 posts)The daughters have just been told that their father fell from a height equal to the roof of the house. And what are they concerned about? Hmm...their parents are old...their parents may die soon...their parents may spend the daughters' inheritance (otherwise known as, their parents own money) on funeral expenses.
And we can't have that, now can we? "Is he fine? Oh, good. Let's talk about you not spending our money, hmm?"
