Jim, MiddleFingerMom, passed away today. This place and all of you made his life worthwhile the past couple of years. He loved you and he loved being able to bring a smile to your face, or especially a guffaw or spit take. His humor and honesty are the two outstanding traits that bound our friendship. He could be a dick if he disagreed with you, but he was totally honest and never bullshitted anybody. In fact the only fib I ever saw him tell in over 10 years of knowing him, was the one about being immortal. Rest in Peace my friend.

(115,639 posts)I've only been here a short while and traded a few barbs and email messages with Jim, but I really looked forward to reading his posts and enjoying his zaniness.
I know that he had many medical problems recently so I hope that his passing was actually a blessing so he could be relieved of the pain and hardship. He will be sorely missed, but all of us have been benefited from getting to know him.
Thank you Kali for all that you have done to look out for our friend.

(122,072 posts)laugh their asses off with him there. It wasn't just the humour that made MFM so special. He extended the hand of friendship to us all and teased us. In my case that made made me feel safe and happy. And I trusted him implicitly. Which is very rare for me. He had ideas for how I could entertain my parents. He encouraged my lounge posts. He was brilliantly funny in a gentle self effacing way. I'm glad he is not in any pain right now...but am not ready for this huge space. This will change the DU for me. And for us all. But he'll be here for all eternity and generations who study the origins of internet will come upon his timeless humour and enjoy it. No MFM is not done yet. Our relationship to him has just changed. WE watch'd her breathing thro' the night,
Her breathing soft and low,
As in her breast the wave of life
Kept heaving to and fro.
So silently we seem'd to speak,
So slowly moved about,
As we had lent her half our powers
To eke her living out.
Our very hopes belied our fears,
Our fears our hopes belied
We thought her dying when she slept,
And sleeping when she died.
For when the morn came dim and sad,
And chill with early showers,
Her quiet eyelids closedshe had
Another morn than ours.

And I have a confession: I had a crush on him (in a DU personae way only) several summers ago. I could no longer take the contentious Obama threads in GD back then & for the first time, I began checking out the Lounge after years of ignoring it in favor of focusing on GWB discussions in GD.
I liked the name "MiddleFingerMom" right away. It attracted my attention enough to want to know what's on the inside of his subject lines. I think he could have been a great comedy writer; I liked the way he could take a corny idea & turn it into something clever.
I initially thought MFM was a woman. I've enjoyed SoCalDem's writing style & humor for years & was beginning to wonder if this "MFM" could actually be a SoCalDem (sorry--> ) sock ; their humor & intelligence struck me as similar.
He had integrity. At times he needed moral support, he gave the benefit of the doubt to those who posted unkind things to him/about him. That's right; in private e-mails, which would only be read by the two of us, he gave them the benefit of the doubt. Pettiness wasn't his style; he never said an unkind word toward anyone in my exchanges with him. He was that good of a person.
I'm stunned. I enjoyed his presence on DU so much. He will be missed tremendously.

On Edit:
You know, I am just about to reach my first year, February would be when I'll hit it. Reading MFM's posts has been a joy.
To tell the truth, even when I hear about his medical problems, I always thought he was young, and as he said, immortal.
I thought he was someone younger but wiser than me. When I see pictures of a guy with white hair and beard, I kept thinking those were posts being ironic, more than anything else.
It was actually only late last month that I finally wrapped my mind around the fact that the head being posted in various states of dishabille was indeed MFM. It made things just funnier.

I'll miss the guy, but he will still be immortal in my mind.

"In the Embers" by Sleeping At Last
We live and we die like fireworks
Our legacies hide in the embers
May our stories catch fire and burn
Bright enough to catch God's eye
We live and we die like fireworks
We pull apart the dark
Compete against the stars with all of our hearts
'Til our temporary brilliance turns to ash
We pull apart the darkness while we can
May we live and die a valorous life
May we write it all down in cursive light
So we pray we were made in the image of a figure-eight
May we live and die like fireworks
We pull apart the dark
Compete against the stars with all of our hearts
'Til our temporary brilliance turns to ash
We pull apart the darkness while we can
Like fireworks we pull apart the dark
Compete against the stars with all of our hearts
'Til our temporary brilliance turns to ash
We pull apart the darkness while we can

(4,734 posts)Most in the lounge remember MiddleFingerMom for his razor sharp, zany sense of humor .
I got to see the serious side of MFM in the few times he left the lounge, and was fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the intellect behind the humor. I personally think he made a lot of less gifted folks uncomfortable, which is why they were happy to see him stay here.
And I think he loved being here, where he was so loved and appreciated.
He Will Be Missed.
Nothing in the world is permanent, and were foolish when we ask anything to last, but surely were still more foolish not to take delight in it while we have it. If change is of the essence of existence one would have thought it only sensible to make it the premise of our philosophy.

(18,913 posts)...just spotted this. What a sad piece of news.
Before I go any further, I want too clarify something that many of you already know...I am here under the screen name "Miles Archer" because my computer died in October and I lost everything, including User IDs and Passwords. I couldn't request a password reset because I didn't remember which email address I'd used to sign up. But before the crash, I was DUer Amerigo Vespucci, so MFM and I had a long history of give-and-take here.
When I think of Jim, the first thing that usually comes to mind is the glee he would express when I'd post some horrendously inappropriate graphic, telling me he'd "stolen" it for future use.
We didn't communicate much outside of the Lounge, but we did exchange a few PMs. He was always torn between positing for his own enjoyment and posting for response and recognition. I'd encourage him to just do his thing and tell him about posts of my own that...in my opinion...were dripping with genius and totally lacking in responses.
We all know the ups and downs of his health in the last few years...more than any one person should go through. He's at rest now, pulling down his pants in that great corner bar in the sky. He accomplished what many of us attempt and few of us achieve...he was an original, through and through, to the end. I am convinced that he would want nothing other than unrestrained merriment in his memory, no sadness, no morose thoughts...so join me in partying for Jim.
