i've been leaving peanuts out for horace for a few months now and could probably feed him by hand if i were so inclined, but he's still a wild animal and i'm afraid of him eating my face. he's waiting for me a lot of mornings and will run up while i'm setting out the peanuts. he doesn't even bother going back to the tree to eat, he just hangs out on the edge of our patio wall and makes a mess.
i've gotten so much joy watching him stuff his face on a near daily basis and figured it was time to snap a pic of him.

It's nice to be able to get close to wildlife though. Around here you almost have to shoulder the deer out of the way they're so tame.

(585 posts)I had one, too. I put corn out for the squirrels & a couple of summers ago, one got really fat. One morning there wasn't any corn out yet and he actually came up to the sliding glass door & peered inside, like, "Hello? Where's mah food?!"

(6,011 posts)We live in a former "prairie" west of Sacramento and of the squirrel family I had only seen ground squirrels, popping up and scurrying in fields. Then last year a tree squirrel found its way into our back yard and beat a hasty retreat up the Virginia creeper vine to an eave when our dog appeared at the back door. More recently a lone tree squirrel, probably the same one, was in our neighbor's maple tree and in the alley...I think he might have a nook in someone's garage where he stores black and English walnuts, almonds, and pecans from neighborhood trees.
If you want to see some interesting bi-and tri-colored squirrels from Nepal, India, S.E. Asia, and Indonesia do an image search for "Asian giant squirrels". There is a great photo of a gliding Red and White Giant Flying Squirrel in the Qinling Mountains of Central China among the photos, too.
