The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI'm trying gutka for the first time. Ask me anything.
A big weakness of mine is American moist snuff (aka "dip" . It's not sold here, but I've found gutka, which is, and seems to be marginally similar (it's tobacco, betel leaf, calcium carbonate, and spices). I'll be trying it momentarily, and will take your questions.
(gutka per se is now banned in all states of India except one, however, the constituent components are still legal to be sold separately, so I've bought a packet of each.)

(53,137 posts)I guess that's pretty much the same question as Bertha's. Why try a tobacco product given the health risks?

(56,582 posts)All the cool kids are doing it. More seriously, I'm curious what it's like. Mostly, it's like chewing tobacco plus taking a mild stimulant, which I suppose is exactly what it is.

(16,230 posts)It sounds like it's as bad, or worse, than tobacco.

(56,582 posts)(Paan mishti if it's a Bengali place.) It has a nice little numbing effect on the tongue and gums. Paan mithai will have candy or sweets of some sort in the leaf; it's used as a breath freshener.
