So, I watched Land of the Dead the other day, and witnessed zombies firing machine guns. It just felt wrong. What do you think?

I warn you now, if you hated the idea of zombies using tools and trying to be human.

They are scary because death and reanimation have made them into inhuman abominations. Intelligence gives some humanity back. Let the zombies be their bad ol' flesh-munching animal-like selves, I say.

Never, ever, ever watch Survival of the Dead.
Oh, don't watch it if you hate shitty movies as well.

Bill Hinzman, who passed away just yesterday, played Ghoul #1 in Night of the Living Dead, and in that role he is clearly seen trying to get at Barbara who has taken refuge in her car.
The ghoul pounds on the window several times, steps back, looks around, and grabs a large stone with which he then shatters the glass. Clearly this ghoul has identified a problem and ponders its solution before implementing that solution.
Personally, I'm not a fan of tool-using ghouls or zombies, but I have to concede that the founder of the genre made his feelings known very early on in the premiere film.

(3,134 posts)9. I'm with you on this one.
And he also used the same idea in the first two sequels as well. Here's a quote from Dawn of the Dead,
"The normal question, the first question is always; are these cannibals? No, they are not cannibals. Cannibalism in the true sense of the word implies an intrapecies activity. These creatures cannot be considered human. They prey on humans. They do not prey on each other, that's the difference. They attack and they feed only on warm human flesh. Intelligence? Seemingly little or no reasoning power, but basic skills remain a more remembered behaviors from normal life. There are reports of these creatures using tools. But even these actions are the most primitive, the use of external articles as bludgeons and so forth. I might point out to you that even animals will adopt the basic use of tools in this manner. These creatures are nothing but pure, motorized instinct. We must not be lulled by the concept that these are our family members or our friends. They are not. They will not respond to such emotions." ~ Dr. Millard Rausch, Scientist
