His name is "Phoenix". He is a laptop. He has been through hell and back with me.
Anyone else have a name for their computer or vehicle?

(6,154 posts)Well that's the host name I've given my desktop. I built it myself in a Corsair 800D case which resembles the black monolith from 2001.
Perhaps I should call it "that which keeps me alive" Cause I think I'd honestly be insane without it. My computer and more generally some form of connection to the internet is the only thing that keeps me going a lot of the time.

(6,154 posts)I wish I could say I worked from home. Truth is I just mope and stew in my depression a lot of the time. My parents shouldn't enable me at my age but they do. I tell them to kick me out of the house often but they wont. I've thought of trying to work at home on a number of occasions. I have the intelligence to develop the necessary skills, programming, IT, web design, image processing etc etc... I'm 1/2 way through an IT degree. but I have no idea where I would develop the necessary business network required to gain business.

Now I just consult for companies, it would not be good if I ever had to return to the inside of a cubicle..

(56,582 posts)Actually even if you use Windows, it has to have a name, it will just automatically make up one if you don't give it one.
I'm a sysadmin, so my computers (always plural) are generally named in themes. Currently my laptops are named after Marine Corps generals: Archibald and Smedley.
The last set of servers I managed were named after Presidents: Washington, Adams, Jefferson, etc. I think we got up to McKinley by the time I left that job.
The biggest network I ever managed named the servers after cats: Garfield, Morris, Liono, Whiskers, Fritz, Punkin (that was my cat at the time), etc.

(34,139 posts)The computer is in a huge blue case. I bought the case when motherboards were bigger, needed a lot of cooling and hard drives not as large as now. At one point I had four hard drives, 5.25" & 3.5"floppy drives, a CD reader, and a CD writer in the case - and I still had empty drive bays! I managed to transfer all my old files off floppy drives and burn to CDRs. This case has seen four or five motherboards and a whole range of upgrades.
The next computer I build will be in a much smaller case. It's time to downsize!
The Suburban is white - and about the size of a whale.
