(81,901 posts)I've been using it for 2 days and am starting to get used to it. DU is beautiful in Metro IE, but spell check doesn't work. Spend some time with it. It will get better. Some people have downloaded "classic shell." But I think you should take the time to figure out the start menu. There's some great stuff there. You should also hook up the "Microsoft" account (or whatever it's called). The web features in the new Start menu are pretty nice.
Do you have a touch screen?

What kind of laptop did you get?

(42,009 posts)It's goosey as hell. Seems to want to do things by itself, and I get stuck in windows I can't get out of. It's like having a skittish horse that spooks if you breathe on it. I'm sure we'll learn to get along but, damn.

(2,431 posts)I had a laptop built for me with Win7 Ultimate about a month 1/2 ago, which is probably the best way to avoid getting stuck with the unmitigated disaster that is Win8.
Yep, it's taking a big dump with businesses choosing not to upgrade, so good luck finding a Win7 box at Best Buy; it will be forced down the throats of we the consumers.
Sure, buy a Mac. Pay three times the price to do the same stuff and be just as vulnerable to malware as Windows users. Bite the Apple of Sauron. Maybe someday they will make an SFTP client that works. Maybe they won't. We'll see... and you will pay.
The folks in the custom-build business saw this coming from miles away and they will be happy to build you a lovely Win7 box. I love mine. Because it's not a Mac I could actually afford solid-state drives and 3GB of video RAM.

(81,901 posts)I don't know if that's true. But if it is, it may not matter if Win 8 is successful.
I am using Win 8 and I can see why business would avoid it. The Start menu is very different and is really targeted at consumers. There is no "classic" start menu built in. You can download a third part tool like "Classic Shell." I don't think that most business will do that. Windows XP lasted around 9-10 years in business. I don't see why Windows 7 can't do the same thing.
