What kind of internet connection do you have?

Last edited Fri Nov 30, 2012, 04:31 AM - Edit history (2)

There is a discussion in the photography group about upping the max size limit for photos. I think that we should poll DUers to see what kind of bandwidth we are dealing with here on average to help us in coming up with a solution.

You can use this website to measure your speed if you don't know. Please hit the poll when you are done.

Mine is terribly slow as I live in the middle of nowhere.

Feel free to kick this thread to the top of the pile so we can collect more info.

Thank you all for participating.

I'm pretty happy about it, even if the ping times still suck.

Not great. Kinda slow. Drops out occasionally. But I'm rural and thrilled to NOT be on dial-up anymore so I'll take it.

I'll take watching the data limits over dial-up ANY day though! What a transformation its made in my internet use.

I just switched to US Cellular last month after using the Verizon unit. Service here is the same with both but the US Cellular was cheaper.

and not just dial up, but SLOW dial-up

now I can at least LOOK at the photography group! I couldn't open the contest pages before, they took way to long to load.

I know there are still a few on dial-up (I did a survey once on DU2) but for the most part I would think they can't access that group anyway, so upping your resolution isn't going to actually affect them. I wonder how difficult it would be to occasionally offer a lower res summary of winners once in a while?

if there's a big video on YouTube that I want to watch, or a large 15+mb file that I want to DL, I find it helpful to cue it up early in the morning before I leave to do my errands and they may or may not be finished when I return. That is, if I'm lucky and it doesn't crap out on me...

56k still for me, but looking at high-speed services in my area.

That's not too bad for today, it takes a few seconds to download a song and that kind of pisses me off....

Alright alright, I'll admit it, I did this at work.

My home is cable and it's usually pretty good too, not as good as the above but still. I normally get around 30-33 Mb/s download and 8-10 Mb/s upload with good pings under 40 ms

Friday's are usually quite a bit slower around here. A lot of the bandwidth is taken up with real time meetings including hi-def microscope imaging and manipulation.

That kind of thing takes a lot of work to set up so there aren't many of us that would try to piss off co-workers by having them do it on a Friday afternoon.

I love my Dial-up. Where else can get scorching DL speeds of up to 3.4 Kbs/s....

Yes, 3.4 KBS/S...

I live in the boonies up in Canada...this sucks.

No options though.

Either Satellite, which I've heard from my neighbours is a gigantic waste of money...

Or I can get a Bell/Rogers Rocket Hub, which I've heard from my neighbours is a gigantic waste of money...

Sigh.

I want to stream movies, dammit.

Rant over.

Do I want a responsive interne experience (sounds kinky )?

Help! I have a 16 year old so I should know these things....

50. The simplest explanation for ping time
Sun Dec 2, 2012, 07:03 PM
Dec 2012

is basically your computer saying hello to a server and the server saying hello back.

Latency is the amount of time from your computer sending the hello to the time it receives the reply.

The most simplistic example is a 500ms ping time means it takes a quarter of a second for your computer's request to get to a website, and a quarter of a second for you to get the response from the website.

The main value in low latency is online games. The reason I don't play online games now is because there's a 1.2-1.5 second delay in my reaction...so by the time I can react and the game acknowledges my reaction I'm already dead. Other than that you won't really notice it unless your latency gets really really high (into the thousands range).
