The Mount Rushmore of American entertainers: who you got?

Last edited Mon Apr 29, 2024, 10:27 AM - Edit history (1)

Biggest stars across all entertainment categories: singers, actors, athletes.

Here's mine:

Elvis Presley: not really a fan, but he's the clear number one. Americana through and through, even into the military.
Michael Jackson: he WOULD have been number one, except for his issues.
Lucille Ball: dominated television for sooooo long.
Muhammad Ali: Edited to add Ali, how could I forget the man? Bold, brash, but so loveable and talented.

And with that I can't decide on number 4.

Madonna?
Babe Ruth?
Stevie Wonder?
Michael Jordan?
John Wayne?
Clint Eastwood?
Meryl Streep?
Tom Hanks?
Robin Williams?

Robin Williams should, himself, be the subject of a movie but how on Earth would they find anybody to play him?

I chose Williams because of his comedic genius but really would put them 4a and 4b.

Singer: Bing Crosby - the ultimate crooner. The guy apparently sang around the house regularly. His voice is still soothing to listen to and it’s clarity never has been equaled.
Actor: Meryl Streep - is there a speaking style accent she cannot master? And - managed to accurately replicate the off key singing of Florence Foster Jenkins. She is the character she portrays.
Comedian: I second Lucille Ball. Masterful timing. Her physical comedy is still a joy to watch.
Athlete: Tough given so many sports. A tie: Jim Brown rushed for over 12000 yards over an 8 year career - retiring at age 30. Ted Williams: amazing hitter. I have read that hitting a baseball is one of the most difficult athletic skills to master because it requires such a quick assessment of the pitch and the rapid reflex to swing at it. Williams had a .344 career BA.
