It is true though scientists estimate that alligators have been around 150 million years or more. And, in their current form for perhaps 8 million years. They believe they survived the extinction event that got the dinosaurs. And underwent minor evolutionary changes until roughly 8 million years ago.

When I was in grade school, we walked past a house on our way to school whose owner had two small alligators. His yard had a heavy fence. There was a small concrete pond for the gators. We used to see them in the yard in fall and spring when it was warm. I don't know what he did with them in winter. Maybe had a heated basement for them.

One got loose once, very briefly, before the owner had it back in the yard. His neighbors complained and he had to get rid of them. I don't know how he managed to keep them as long as he did since "exotic" pets were not legally allowed.
