Last day of clinic at the old job. I guess they wanted me to "finish strong".

I've got so much shit piled up on my schedule, I'm starting to look for a window to jump out of.

Please, don't let this be the day my heart finally gives out...

2. If I have a clinical stint I am dreading, I just take it hour by hour...

Get through the hour and give yourself a little acknowledgment each time--pretty soon your last day is done. Then again, I sometimes crave emergencies because the focus does blot out all the irritating background nonsense.

6. I kind of, sort of, almost said that once.

It was when I was in the Army, serving as a tank crewman. We were doing live-fire exercises, which every tanker lives for. Our unit was understrength (not unusual for a stateside unit), and averaged three or fewer crewmen for a tank that crews four. So we had to fill in the gaps. I served as a loader for the live-fire exercises, and found myself hopping on and off nearly every tank in the company, nearly non-stop for three days.

That was a workday that very nearly didn't end.

I was twenty-two then, and full of piss and vinegar. I'd do it all again if they asked me to.

I got a few with my clumsy old Polaroid. They're around somewhere.

5. Hang in there. If there are things you can't finish by the end of the day, so be it.

At the end of the day you are finished. Your replacement will have to deal with it. One time when I started a new job and saw my desk it was piled high with so much stuff. It wasn’t ordered or anything. The first few days I tried digging thru it but it was obviously a lost cause. I finally boxed it all up and took it to the “fan room” for the central AC. I figured anything that was important would show up again one way or another. I think there was only one time I ever went down and dug thru the boxes looking for something.

Get done what you can and walk away at the end of the day.
