Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI saw the Barbie movie this afternoon
Comments follow:
1. Somehow they managed to make a movie with Will Ferrell in it that I actually liked.
2. Yes, it's woke as fuck. That's what makes it so good.
3. The production design ALONE is worth the cost of admission.
4. The four most delightful characters in the company were Kate McKinnon's Weird Barbie, America Ferrara's Barbie-loving Mattel employee Gloria, Rhea Perlman's Ruth, and Helen Mirren as the Narrator.
5. The last few minutes of the film are truly touching, as it is revealed who the old lady Margot Robbie's Barbie met at a bus stop really is.
6. The second most charming scene is the one where Gloria does Stereotypical Barbie's makeup, as she would have done with her real Barbies as a child.
7. Most children, and many adults, won't understand most of the jokes in this movie. The picture borrows heavily from such classic films as 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Matrix and Brazil. Figure on seeing this a few times so you can catch all of them; a lot of the jokes whip by so fast they're gone before you notice.
8. Not only is it a two-hour Barbie commercial, it's a commercial for GM's line of electric cars. Gloria drives a Blazer EV SS electric SUV, while Ken chose a Hummer pickup.
9. It'll be more fun if you get all dolled up for the occasion. The more hot pink you're wearing, the better.
10. Go. Just go. You'll love it.

Again, I'm reminded of "Shelley Berman's Cleans and Dirties" - and the extra category Berman presented in the book: "Clirties." Which stood for cleaned-up dirties. One of my dad's bathroom books that I found most interesting as a child.

(50,559 posts)There was a scene in The Real World where Barbie told someone she has no vagina and Ken has no penis.

(10,053 posts)I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It felt like a mother-daughter movie in some ways....
My favorite scene was when America Ferrera did her "woman" monologue, I cried.

(33,525 posts)It wouldn't have been such a let down. I have to love Barbie though, if only it obviates just how far up their own asses Republican heads are.
Oppenheimer was the best movie I've seen in a very long time though, and, well, Barbie just didn't compare.
At my age, it seemed right to give in and do something consistent with pop culture, Barbieheimer.
Barbie was cute, but just that, cute.
I did like the 2001 reference; I don't recall the Brazil reference, and I've never seen the Matrix.
jmowreader
(50,559 posts)The Matrix reference was the "choose a shoe" scene.
In that movie, Laurence Fischburne offered Keanu Reeves two pills, a blue one and a red one. Choosing the blue one would get him taken back to his apartment, the red one would let him join their special club.

(7,627 posts)So that people know that you're revealing important points to the movie, that may not have seen it yet. Just a friendly suggestion, I'm not trying to be crass about my suggestion.
Luckily, I went to the theater out of the blue to watch it yesterday so there wasn't any spoilers for me.
Although, I didn't get all dolled up to watch it, I agree with your point #10.

(1,646 posts)She met Ruth Handler in a ghost office in the Mattel building. (I put a spoiler alert because I said the name. Myself, I knew it was Ruth Handler as soon as I saw her. Who else could it be?)
This is the old lady at the bus stop. Which is fascinating, and I would never have looked it up if not for your post.
