The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI had a scare Sunday evening when I went to a local convenience store.
The store is just a few blocks away, within easy walking distance. When I got a block away, I could hear screaming and yelling in the store's parking lot. Angry, threatening tones. Because of parked cars in the store's lot, I could not clearly see what was happening, but I did get a glimpse of a woman running around the side of a car. Someone opened the car's door for her to get in, but she screamed and ran from the car.
From a distance, it looked like a possible abduction attempt. I pulled out my phone to call 911 and slowed down my steps, not wanting to get caught in the middle. The possibility of a gun and shooting came to mind since these days, people are quick to "solve" arguments that way.
Then a cop car whizzed past me and turned into the lot. I waited from a distance until the yelling stopped. When I got closer, it turned out to be two women arguing. They each had young children standing nearby. Two cops were questioning them.
Once inside the store, I asked the clerk what was going on. She said the 2 women started arguing inside the store. When they got outside, one woman grabbed the other one and they both went down. So the store clerk called the cops.
The argument? One woman accused the other of having an affair with her boyfriend. These were adult women, not teenagers!
What a sign of the times that I had feared the possibility of a shooting. On the way home, I thought about it. Fortunately that was not the case this time. But it's prudent to consider that possibility these days since people carry guns and shoot when angry.

(21,910 posts)at least not at that time. I wished that I'd gone to the store earlier and missed the whole thing.

(21,910 posts)The kids not only got to see their mothers acting like idiots for everyone to see and hear, but the kids of one of the mothers got to hear her called names not suitable for kids to hear.
What the hell is wrong with people? They think only of their egos and not of their responsibilities to the safety and emotional well being of their kids.

(102,674 posts)The truth is we are seeing an increase in entitled white women going after POC--or each other. And this white woman is damned tired of it.
And, I might add, no one mentioned the race of those involved. Presumedly entitled women of all races could be "Karens"--as could men.

(153,485 posts)you were concerned about someone's safety and that was enough to call - and you are also correct about not putting yourself in the middle of a disturbance in gun humping America

(21,910 posts)I was going to, but before I could call, the police arrived on the scene. The store clerk had seen outside the store window that the argument had turned physical and the clerk made the 911 call before I could.
What concerned me most initially was the possibility that a parking lot fight could turn into a shooting. There were children present. There were customers in the store who could have been hit by a stray bullet. There were people leaving the store and some, like myself, on their way to the store. The store is at a very busy intersection, so there were cars passing by.
There were so many people who could have been hurt if the fight escalated to shooting, which happens far too often now.
But when it was clear that the police were in control of the situation and no guns were involved, I felt bad for the children of those women who witnessed the entire incident. I'd guess their ages ranged between 3 and 8 years old.

(9,004 posts)learn the behavior, and turn around and do it later in life.........We need to break the chain of that happening.
Believe me, I know. Children are frightened to their core, and horrified when they witness domestic abuse and this kind of behavior.......

(14,180 posts)Btw, your likelihood of getting shot now is lower than it was in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. The murder rate was far higher then. Whats different now is we have more mass shootings.

(10,159 posts)Thankfully it wasn't an abduction, just two stupid adult children having a pissing match

(21,910 posts)as I approached the store, it really sounded like something much worse.
I'm glad that it wasn't, but very annoyed at the children in adult bodies who caused the commotion.

(8,008 posts)for teenage groups to do is surround convenience stores, not let anyone leave and rob the customers and ransack the store One of the stores hit was Sheetz one street away from John Glenn International Airport. I was attendinga class on the same street the next day..
