Which goes in a Reuben? I heard an argument in a pub last night between two managers of different places. One declared a Reuben should have pastrami. One declared it should have corned beef. Which should it be?

Pastrami is a food originating from Romania usually made from beef brisket. Later recipes use lamb, pork, chicken or turkey. The raw meat is brined, partially dried, seasoned with herbs and spices, then smoked and steamed. Wikipedia

(9,282 posts)Interesting job for this Lutheran. Never developed a taste for lox but loved corned beef and pastrami. Our Reuben was with corned beef. My absolute favorite sandwich is a Corned Beef Special, the one with coleslaw and Russian dressing (served cold) on good rye.

(1,856 posts)The classic Reuben sandwich has corned beef.
If you substitute pastrami or turkey pastrami it's called a Rachel in many circles.
If someone wants to call a Rachel a Reuben I have no problem with it.
I don't eat Reuben's or Rachel's, but I enjoy pastrami or corned beef on rye with mustard.

(82,849 posts)It was always pastrami for me.
Nowadays I have to watch my intake of certain foods, and pastrami is pretty much off the menu. If I'm ever in a position to request my final meal, though, that's what I'm having.
