(8,958 posts)wear sandals, with or without socks. I also never go barefoot outdoors, except to swim and I am not a water person, either. I am hyper-allergic to poison ivy & poison oak. Had some very very bad cases as a child growing up in Ohio, including several involving blisters on the bottom of my feet the size of sand dollars. At 10 we moved to Oregon and I thought I'd left poison ivy behind, but soon had similar experiences with poison oak. My worst case occurred while riding my horse barefoot and bareback. He reared up in reaction to a snake and I slid off his butt into a patch of poison oak. That was my worst case of P.O. on the bottoms of my feet.

Though I will say I was sporting the look with some camo joggers ( Im 62) and a twenty something young man opened the door for me at a convenience store and said cool outfit. Made my day and then I thought that kids mom did a good job!

(6,641 posts)Let's face it kids, even if you don't have what's considered 'stinky feet' (and I don't), sockless sandals get odiforous after a while.
I'm 70 with a foot problem and it takes me a LONG time to find comfortable shoes and sandals. So l'm not about to scuz up a pair of good fitting sandals just because others don't like me wearing socks. Nutz to them.
As Red Green used to say: "Ya just want to be comfortable."

(21,788 posts)Both bacteria and their odors can be killed with antiseptic spray. Lysol works, and I've never seen shoes ruined by it. Or, the inside can be wiped with 70 % rubbing alcohol soaked onto a paper towel or cotton ball. It kills bacteria, dries quickly, and does no damage.

(4,407 posts)leather full-toed/-heeled for a bit of height mules, laced running/walking athletic shoes, or boots indoors all winter; love my alpaca and woolies to keep the tootsies warm with jeans or winter-weight leggings. Some days I stay in my Dearfoam fuzzy mules all dang day! Last year they were purple; this past one--leopard print.
In the summer I wear either jeans or a variety of below-the-knee capris with full elastistized laced sandals (turquoise Keenes), Crocs, or white hurache leather flats/espidrilles if I can find them in- and out-doors without socks, and the athletic shoes with low cut socks or hidden in smooth plain white crew-ey cotton/with synthetics or a bamboo combo in a variety of prints/colors. Those sandals with the single toe loop hurt my really short toe space (Ouchy!) so have to have slide styles.

(6,396 posts)I used to wear my Birks all the time outside and barefoot inside. In the winter, I added wool socks for outdoor treks.
Then I discovered soft-soled moccasins. That's pretty much what I wear all the time now. (with socks )

(65,415 posts)Now, I only wear sandals to take the dog outside. I have a high arch, and a really high instep. So, sandals don't fit ke well.
I go sockless (with shoes) in warmer weather, but I wear peds for golf to keep from damaging the insoles.
But, with my limited use of sandals, it's no sucks.
wnylib
(21,788 posts)Therefore, socks and closed shoes feel confining and uncomfortable to me. I have a hard time finding lace up shoes, like sneakers, that fit well. Same with socks. The socks have to be loose and roomy.
So, in summer, I love the freedom for my feet to go sockless in sandals. I just avoid the style of sandals that have straps that go over the instep. I buy sandals that have a strap closer to the toes with another strap that goes behind the foot, for more secure anchoring of the sandal. But my favorites have a wide band that goes across the foot just above the toenails and stops just short of the instep. The band is wide enough to hold the sandal securely on my foot, and leaves my feet feeling free and comfortable without anything restricting the arch/instep area.
I also prefer sandals (and sneakers and other shoes) that have a flat sole, despite my high arch. Conventional wisdom says that high arches need arch support in shoes, but they are uncomfortable to me and leave my feet sore after a few hours. Completely flat shoes feel better on my feet.

(65,415 posts)I haven't had shoes with laces since I quit playing basketball in rec leagues. That was 29 years ago!
I've always been a loafer guy.
I don't even wear golf shoes because nobody makes a slip-on for that application.
I wear pads to keep from messing up the inside of my Skechers & argyle socks when I substitute teach.
Other than that, I'm a sock-free type.
Also, helps with the burning sensation in my feet from the MS.

(21,788 posts)Anyone can have high arches and insteps and wide feet, but in the US, all 3 foot traits are more common among Native Americans than among non Native people. In my case, I guess it's a legacy from my paternal grandparents. Most of my paternal cousins have the same foot and shoe issues.

(7,767 posts)I hate sandals with a passion. I hate flip-flops even more than sandals since I can't stand that strap in between my toes.
Also, there is zero support in either sandals or flip flops.

(25,775 posts)summer shoes that are good on the feet? Thanks
My personal preference are the Skechers slip-ins. Most of them have a breathable material made for summer.
If you happen to purchase a pair of Skechers, please double check the tread on the bottom of the shoe. I once purchased a pair of Skechers (this only happened once in all of my 12+years of purchasing this brand) and the tread was severely lacking and made it dangerously slippery, even in the summer.
I certainly hope this helps.
debm55
(25,775 posts)wider. I am having a hard time looking for shoes in a summer color--white. for an 8 wide. My black ones look like orthopedic shoes. I need something like. Thanks for the heads up on the treads. Have a great day.

(7,681 posts)When I did, I would occasionally do the "sandals with socks" look in cold weather, but those occasions were very rare.

(1,349 posts)The whole purpose of sandals IMO is to have footwear that lets your feet cool off and still provide some protection from banging your toes on something. Socks would defeat the purpose.
