(34,448 posts)Do the easy part of fostering and donating. I am so thankful that volunteers do the actual rescues and vets try to save them all.

We have 2 rescue dogs who look like 2 of the dogs in the ad! So glad we were able to give them warm loving homes!!

Jagger was living on a chain when we got him. He was a giveaway on Craiglist. About 3 years old. The owners wanted to be sure to find a home that wouldn't make him into a fighting dog! He's Chow Aussie mix. Looks like he's part Husky. He was very defensive when we got him with some bad behaviors. He's a complete love now. We've worked hard with him - love and calmness.
Juniper (daughter's 1st dog! She scored!) was about a year old - already had one litter (unspayed) found roaming abandoned on a ranch in a dog pack. She experienced being recovered, spayed and vetted, and a couple moves in a span of a weekend. She now sleeps in my daughter's bed and comes when called at the off-leash park!
Heaven is a rescue dog!! ❤️❤️

(14,745 posts)They never used to, but put those ads on anyway. If they aren't using their money to help animals in shelters, why the shelter ads?

Contrary to what many people might think and despite the similar names and missions, the Houston SPCA, which operates a local shelter, a veterinary clinic and an animal ambulance amongst its services, isn't in any way affiliated with the national ASPCA. Neither is any local SPCA across the country.

It's hard.

(22,068 posts)I'm on their monthly plan. Somehow I ended up going from $20 a month, to $25.
Like others, the ads tear me up. But I always think, I'm doing the best I can to help. Now, I'm feeling duped. One thing I have noticed about the ads lately, is that if you get past the dogs chained to doghouses in the snow, the rest are in outside chainlink kennels. Makes me wonder if they are already in a shelter.
I may switch my donations to the Humane Society. We've adopted one dog from there several years ago, and looking at another now. I stopped at the local shelter/pound on the way home today, just to see what they had. It was hard not to bring home several. Funny thing--the dog catcher is also the county coroner.

(6,913 posts)I support our local shelter. When I see a bad thing happening, I want to intervene at once. Since the ads show creatures in distress but you cant help them, they are just dismal.
