(28,837 posts)I firmly believe dogs let cavemen take them in for not the food, but for the creature comforts. Like fires and fur blankets.
Edit: my dogs would eat mastodon poop. But fur blanket

(111,329 posts)although we didn't start living with them until we started to harvest and store grain and found a cat or ten would hunt the rodents that ate the grain. We made friends with the kittens, who decided they quite liked us.
They already know we were living with dogs during the Mesolithic, the excavation at Star Carr in the UK has turned up formal burials of dogs distantly related to modern sheep dogs. It's a short leap from following herds of animals to actively herding them, and what enabled us to make that leap was the help of dogs.
