you CANNOT compare yourself to Don Larson.

(19,208 posts)Ridiculous. But now the Phillies and their fans can understand what Yankees fans went through since immediately after the All-Star break: batters completely losing their ability to put the bat on the ball.
Let's hope it only lasts one game for Philadelphia, and not half of a season.
Go Phillies! ⚾️

(22,075 posts)But isnt it more important to assure a victory in a World Series game?
I understand the desire to see an exceptional performance but why risk a win when this is the culmination of years of hard work by everyone on the team?
MLB lost me years ago so I really dont care. Let me say this: an ugly legitimate win beats a grateful loss any day of the week.

(4,223 posts)to use 4 pitchers. They chose to. You cannot deny the Astros bullpen is stupendous

(8,982 posts)Larson's perfect World Series game was helped along by the spot-on defensive play of his teammates. In addition to that, effective hand signal communication between pitcher and catcher is an important element. Yogi deserves at least some of the credit for the fact that not a single Dodger batter took first base on the basis of four balls being pitched.

(23,897 posts)Cristian Javier DID pitch 6 No Hit innings and the Astros did end up with a NO Hit win. He should be applauded for his 6 no hit innings.
But true, Don Larsen pitched 9 innings of "No Hit" "Perfect" ballgame.
Totally different situations.
RussBLib
(9,061 posts)Not sure why that is.
onenote
(42,860 posts)The overriding reason is that more pitches are thrown in today's game. Harvey Haddix threw 12 perfect innings with only 106 pitches.Larsen threw 97 pitches in his 9 inning perfect game. Javier threw 97 pitches in six innings. Completing the game required another 40+ pitches.
Why more pitches? One guess is that there are a lot more pitches fouled off these days. Plus batters are selective, tryiing to work the count.
Finally, this column gives a fuller explanation of the changes that have occurred in the game and why. https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/11/03/cristian-javier-don-larsen-complete-game/

(4,223 posts)It was the second no hitter in WS history, stated as a fact rather than a comparison.

Two future hall of fame high-kicking pitchers, Juan Marichal and Warren Spahn faced off for the dual of the century on July 2, 1963 at the 'Stick'.
On July 2, 1963, Juan Marichal pitched a 16-inning shutout against the Milwaukee Braves, outdueling Warren Spahn, who pitched 151/3 scoreless innings before Willie Mays won it 1-0 with a home run. Marichal threw 227 pitches; Spahn threw 201. (To Hell with that wussy pitch count crap!)
Ferrets are Cool
(21,117 posts)They didn't pay players what they do now so they didn't care if they threw their arms OFF.
One other thing about last nite and the comparisons to Don Larson. Larson threw 97 pitches in 9 innings...the starting pitcher threw 97 in the first 6 innnings last nite.

(36,508 posts)The downside is pitchers are benched for, like, two seasons.
Fifty percent of everything, or a hundred percent of nothing

(25,783 posts)trouble the final innings? A pitcher had to go a certain amount of innings to be credited with the game if his team won, while the Bullpin pitcher got the save. Now it is very rare to see any pitcher go the distance. That turned me off. I still have my Pittsburgh Pirates book as I watched the game and made the marks in it showing the goings on every inning.

to see an Ear,Nose and Throat Specialist. When it came to baseball, I am a purist. Never liked the DH rule either.

Then don't go into the thread, just to trash what other people enjoy.

(25,783 posts)a win? Didn't watch the game. When I watched baseball, you had to go a certain amount of innings to get the win. Say you left in the third inning and the relief pitcher came and the team won, the starter would not get the win. Did the rules change? Just asking for a friend.Wolves are beautiful, not a wolf, Sorry, I appear that way. Times have changed since I watched and that was the Pirates/Atlanta series from years ago.

(1,766 posts)That's still not an excuse to go into a thread about a topic you hate and trash something other people enjoy.
If you hate it, ignore it.
What part of that is so hard to comprehend?

(1,766 posts)They're not comparing it to Larsen, only saying it's the first time something like it's been done since him.
Big difference.
It's still a commendable feat, and no threat to Larsen's achievement at all.

(9,061 posts)I think people like to get riled up sometimes. Almost looking for something to attack or be offended by.
And, btw, this is the first-ever combined no-hitter in WS history. Astros did the same thing to the Yankees earlier this season, and Javier was the starting pitcher in that game too.
Hopefully Verlander will regain his dominance tonight.

(7,682 posts)asking if people thought Larsen's 1956 WS no-hitter or the Astros 2022 four-pitcher no-hitter was the greater accomplishment. I don't think anyone can rationally argue that Larsen's no-hitter wasn't the greater of the two. However, the one rando who responded to my poll so far selected the Astros' combo no-hitter.
TxGuitar
(4,223 posts)Even a one pitcher no hitter in the WS wouldn't stand up to a perfect game. I've only heard the Astros one last night mentioned as being the second WS no hitter, which is a fact.

(1,347 posts)On Opening Day, 1991, Angels Mark Langston and Mike Witt combined for a seven-inning/two-inning no hitter.
I was so angry with manager Doug Rader I could've cried.
Of course, at 28 I didn't know everything.
I did, however, learn the truth when I was 17.
