The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsIf Yellowstone Park erupted
and became the largest volcanic explosion in recorded history,
and the gulf stream winds are eastward,
then would you prefer to be living in Seattle or Des Moines?
Just a rhetorical question of course.

(2,500 posts)It is the jet stream, not the gulf stream, that will push the molten ash eastward. Then the gulf stream moving northeast will move the billowing clouds of fire, ash, and rock into the north Atlantic circling the entire globe before it returns to the west coast. You should be sitting pretty and completely out of danger.
There is one catch, of course. I have no idea what I'm talking about, which means the odds are great that I'm completely wrong about the whole theory. That's why I like the DU Lounge. I don't have the stress of being right about anything.

(28,791 posts)the general consensus is that we could have small eruptions as it dies off, but the pool below Yellowstone is much cooler than say Hawaii because the mantle plume that was feeding it has disconnected.
and I'd pick Seattle
