... my neighbors complained, so I had to replace them with "proper" plants.

It's a mixture of grass, weeds, wild flowers and other ground cover. I still have to mow it every week or two, though. Our house is in a forest on the side of a mountain and by mowing the "grass," I keep the woods at bay.
