I have quit smoking for over 3 weeks now.

22 days 1 hour and 29 minutes and counting.

A few people here suggested whyquit.com when I first quit and I am very thankful to them. I highly recommend it if you are looking to give up tobacco. You can find me over there in the freedom forum.

A few tips for those looking to quit. It gets a lot easier after 72 hours of abstinence. That's when you break the physiological addiction. The hardcore craves then decrease in frequency over the next couple of weeks until you just have them every once in a while. I really haven't had a bad crave since the 9th day, but it's different for everyone. You still can have craves for the rest of your life because nicotine is a drug and if you use it you are a drug addict...for the rest of your life. But take heart, if you quit before it's too late you will add many years to your life.

That's what I'm focusing on. I've also noticed something else since I quit smoking. I've always been attracted to my wife, but somehow over the last three weeks she has gotten even prettier. She also seems a lot happier and we laugh and joke a lot more than we used to. Jen's been the emotional type ever since I've known her, but I don't think she has cried once in the last three weeks.

Coincidence? I don't know. Why don't you quit and we'll compare notes.

to someone today that it will be 16 years next month since I quit.

Cold turkey.

It was tough the first 7 or 8 days, then got easier.

Although even this far out the cravings still sometimes raise their ugly heads. I smell someone else's smoke and am repulsed and attracted at the same time.

The longer you stick with it, the easier it gets.

find someway to get a return on it and you will be amazed at how much money you will have after a year
(and how much you had burned before)

At $7/pack & 2packs a day that's $14/day X 365 = $5110 - lots of things you can do with $5000

Congratulations - keep us posted - I am so excited for your success (I am in year 37 or 38 - life is so much more fun without that chain)

A while back Mr Pipi found some program that would calculate how much money you've saved by not smoking.

So with both of us quitting 16 years ago, the last count...done five years ago...was upwards of $60,000.

We've been able to get a lot of really cool stuff with the money we saved.

count up all the cigarettes that you would have smoked that you didn't smoke.

Congratulations! I know how hard it is.

Good for you! You are now officially a non-smoker (rather than a smoker who is just trying to quit.)

Build on your success. You're empowered now; every new day that you don't smoke adds to your power.

Is it ok to say that I am proud of you?

I found that it helped me to pick up a new hobby (knitting, in my case). It keeps my mind and my hands busy. If you are doing something that requires your attention, it seems to break that automatic desire to reach for a cigarette to occupy your hands.

Keep it up. It gets easier the longer you go.

I knew it would work eventually. It did for me.

You should start thinking of yourself as a non-smoker now. Enjoy your new found sense of smell and taste too!

I quit 11 years ago, but it took a heart attack to motivate me. Something silly that helped me was just taking a slow, deep breath through pursed lips, holding it for several seconds, then exhaling. The lack of oxygen gives you a bit of buzz similar to taking a drag on a cig.
