It’s based on his world and they purchased the rights to much of his material… but it’s reportedly the second age of middle earth- and there’s precious little material for that. Which simultaneously means that they have lots of room to run and that purists will never be satisfied.

The series is known to be based on stories from The Silmarillion. This book is a collection of tales that are meant as history and mythology of Middle Earth. There's even a beautiful creation myth. There is a chapter called "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age," so I would assume this is based largely on that material. The Silmarillion is a wonderful book. I have it. It was one of the books we studied in the college course I took on Tolkien (such fun!).
