I live in a townhome and I 've been hearing scratching sounds and sounds like scampering in the walls....I'm pretty sure its small squirrels.......Has anyone used a pest control service recently, how much was it and did they solve the rodent issue you had?.......Thanks
we can do it
(12,184 posts)Take them at least 5 miles away, preferably to park.

(31,017 posts)They finally got rid of them by sealing up the attic or something. I could hear them running around. Drove the cats crazy. We still have lots of squirrels in the yard and come up on the deck but, havent had that problem again. Not sure what they did but it was a pest control company I think

(21,330 posts)Mice can also get in the tiniest cracks, like vents.

(6,043 posts)Also constant bright lights at night can drive squirrels away from attics but if they are in walls loud rock music especially at night can be effective. These are techniques for people on a budget.
My neighbors found a wildlife pest control company that guaranteed their removal and sealed all openings to prevent their return and it cost him under $250.00 for a large old house.

(21,330 posts)I leave my garage door up a bit so my 3 outdoor cats can get to their heated cat houses.
Unrelated, but one spring a red squirrel decided he was going to make a home in my garage eaves, big mistake. I have a killer cat who has so far killed 6 red squirrels and basically wiped out the chipmunk population. He does eat them and no I can't find chipmunk flavored cat food anywhere.

(4,429 posts)You probably already know this? But getting them out is really important.
WHITT
(2,868 posts)where they recounted about a guy who rigged-up a couple of bare elements across an opening to 110v, and when the squirrels made contact, the result was crispy critters. Except one got stuck on the elements, caught on fire, and burned the house down.
Don't do that.

(3,257 posts)In sealing up all the holes. (Critter Control?) We had squirrels in our attic years ago. Most of the squirrels will leave during the day and they can close entry points. If you can hear them and theyre loud, its squirrels. My squirrels had quite the time up there chasing each other back and forth. Rats and mice are much quieter.

(3,165 posts)they must be drunk because it sounds like they are running into each other as well as the walls...
Little more info...I rent my townhome (it's a complex that includes both apartments and townhomes), but I let the management company know what's going on as I left a message over the weekend....

(38,958 posts)If you have animals in your attic, 99% of the time it is spring time and the animal is a mother, preparing to give birth, or already nursing her young. Most Mothers choose a spot to rear young during January or February and approximately 60 days later they give birth. Typically they have a litter of 3-6 young. Most babies are born completely helpless, eye still shut, barely fuzzy, and unable to maintain their own body temperature. Mom stays with them up to 23 hours per day, even skipping days worth of her own feeding in the first week.
If you HEAR or SUSPECT something living in the attic, and it is NOT the DEAD OF WINTER, please assume that there are babies present!!! This is the #1 mistake that people make when trying to evict animals! Trapping Mom and relocating or removing her only to find four babies a couple days later is heart wrenching and it is why we raise so many orphans per year. If you set a trap in your attic and catch ANYTHING please check everywhere in the attic for babies before releasing the trapped animal. Call us 24 hours for advice at 1-855-WILD-HELP. Were happy to help.
There are many reasons to attempt to evict animals from your attic yourself: Its simple, effective, and low-cost to free compared to pest control companies that cost at least $200 to take on an attic job. Pest control services will harm and often KILL the animals they catch. You will have to repair the entry holes yourself anyway, or hire another company to do that. You have much more incentive to do this work correctly the first time than a company who depends on your repeat business! Plus Its EASY! No traps required, no bait, no heavy leather gloves, or animal handling experience.
The advice for raccoons which is given works on squirrel as well. It comes down to making the space inhospitable for the animal through a variety of rather inexpensive means. Light, Radio noise, cayenne pepper, ammonia soaked cotton balls, etc.
