Do you dream like Wayne Carini of the restored beauty or the patina of original rust like Mike Wolfe?

(5,337 posts)The ones with the split windshield. Not sure what year they went to a full windshield, I believe it was '67 or '68. I owned a 1963 bus for 20 years and the only reason I got rid of it was because parts were getting too hard to find. It was super easy to work on and I felt like the original hippy driving down the highway at a top speed of 64 mph.

That's why I wouldn't want the XKE.
That and I'm not interested in driving fast!
I drove like an old man when I was 30!!!

(18,402 posts)Back in the 90s. I think it was from 1979. Black with red leather seats, and a roll-back top. He was happy for about 3 months, but the poor machine had so many mechanical problems he had to end his mid-life crisis before the year was out. It was cute for a moment.

(8,351 posts)By helping I mostly held and handed tools but it was amazing to watch someone who knew what they were doing work on a car. Unfortunately all that I learned from him is lost on the new cars. Electronics and metrics.

(6,272 posts)I had so much fun in that car it was pitiful... drove all over CA and then from CA to MA for school. I'm still thinking someday I'll buy one and restore it.

(23,322 posts)A distant cousin of my mother's had one in her garage when she died in the early 1980s--with only 22,000 miles on it! (She literally drove it to the grocery store (2 blocks away), and to church (3 blocks away) and virtually nowhere else!) And not so much as a ding on it anywhere! She had people offer her $20-25,000 for it, and she wouldn't sell it--said it was her only transportation. It sold at auction after her death, and I heard it brought $40,000-plus. Wow.

(7,143 posts)She graces the entrance to the Packard Museum in downtown Dayton, and, IIRC, is a one-off late-1930s Packard Darrin. I haven't been there for a few years, but the museum's reopening in a few days so I'll get to see her again.
Every inch a beauty!

If I win the lottery I'm buying and restoring one of those first and then a 1977 Smokey and the Bandit Trans-Am.
And by "restoring" I mean "hire somebody to restore".
Maybe that Count guy on that Counting Cars TV show. Or those Gas Monkey guys in Dallas. I would have to investigate their politics first. IF I got fantasy money to blow on stuff I can afford to support people who don't have weirdo republican ideas.

I loved the T-Top, too. On summer days, I'd remove the glass panels and drive with the wind in my hair (back when I had hair...).

Several Olds 98s
Oldsmobile Trofeo (it was cobalt blue sigh)
My first car was a 1970 olds 442.
My dad always let me use the convertible in High school. When I was old he told he always gave me the car so I didnt need a ride from some boy. In a small town he would find out if I ever let anyone else drive it.
