(19,969 posts)In his dreams ? My own dog has become far more territorial over the last year, barking at any bird flying over the garden or sitting on the garden fence, and she will give a woof in the middle of her sleep too.

(102,343 posts)likelihood of doing so as they become adults, so your dog's howling may have been "awakened" so-to-speak by the videos of others.
*My past two dogs were crate-trained when I was not home and for some period of time as puppies--at night. The crate was beside my bed in a very interior bedroom that didn't have windows facing other houses. So, there was little to zero exposure to barking dogs at night throughout much of the first year of life. Of course, they would hear dogs bark at the dog park, but never at night (or even during the day) or spontaneously. Neither dog became "barkers" even when we moved and they would occasionally hear a coyote howl or a barking neighbor dog at night. My current dog, has, however occasionally howled at some, but not all passing fire engines. I suspect their siren is at just the right pitch and frequency to trigger her instinctively.

(70,725 posts)My years' long usage when Self-deleting is to put the O.P. in the closing post, here:
********* O.P.:
My little dog has started doing howling a couple of spontaneous episodes.
He's about 3 years old, never howled like at sirens or anything. In recent months I *have* had some YouTube sessions of dogs howling and barking, to which he joined in briefly. When he has done it a bit, he mostly settles down and watches the movements quietly, then loses interest. Fine.
But he has never howled spontaneously without the video prompts. Until last night when he did some howling in the wee hours. He's an inside dog and we're securely sequestered, so nothing is known about what did the prompting. Didn't last long and back to the sleep routine.
So besides last night, just now outside before bedtime, he did a bit of howling out there. Hmm?
Google said howling can be the usual territorial thing or communicating over distance. It's not a problem, just wondering what changed.
