The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI am getting swamped with scam calls.
It started Sunday afternoon when I got 8 in a row. Here it is Wednesday and the calls are still coming.
I made the mistake of hitting "end" one time so they knew I was here. Big mistake.
I have my phone set to only put through contacts now. They have to give up sometime.
They probably set their computer to "harrass" so it's just calling automatically.

(7,754 posts)threatening to have his social security number "flagged and cancelled" if he doesn't respond to some unpaid bill for something that he never bought. Of course, no one can cancel his social security number but there are probably some people out there that don't know that and will reply to these crooks. For the Plump administration, these cons are just trying to run a business.

Here I paid a lot for a phone and the phone is the part I can't really use.
I have been getting a lot of junk emails and texts, too.

(34,137 posts)My reaction was "The call is coming from INSIDE the house!"
Usually I don't answer calls from numbers I don't know. I get tired of the phone ringing so sometimes I pick up the receiver and drop it. I hope they interpret that as the disconnect my phone does for blocked calls.

(38,439 posts)....LISTEN TO THE ENTIRE CALL...THEN...SAY THESE 2 WORDS....."FUCK YOU".........
....All scam calls get the same solution....listen ...then those two words....I am trying this now and don't
know if it works...I will know in a week or two.. You see, it is my idea that the scam call people have a
.................DO NOT CALL LIST.................................................
Whenever they get a call that is awful or threatening....that call gets put on the list (I am guessing the
callers press a button..and the call is automatically on that list....................
If this is true, then those two words....."FUCK YOU".... will get your phone number on that wonderful
list, and you will not get these calls anymore from anybody.. (I am guessing that the scammers share
their lists, since the people listening to these calls have a hard enough job that they do not need to
listen to those 2 words..This is a guess, I do not know for sure, but in a few weeks I will report back to
the lounge with an assessment of this idea....By then, I will have used this for a month, and I will know
if this particular idea works...If not, then I will try something else, but it may work????& This may
not work......???

(14,061 posts)Exactly. As annoying as it is, just ignore them.
question everything

We sometimes wonder whether they originate from the same source

I tried just blocking but they change numbers every time they call so that didn't work.

(14,061 posts)I get these all the time, from strange area codes (111) is common, to names of people I dont recognize as a way to trick me into answering. I just let them ring.
Do Not Call lists are jokes. Id disconnect my landline but I dont trust my cable provider to not mess up the rest of my services. Plus, I get just as many such calls on my cell.
Abuse of a utility, plain and simple.

(36,458 posts)Your number has already been harvested and sold to other scammers, with a tag, 'will respond'.

(4,044 posts)They make some small fraction of a penny on each call, multiplied by tens of millions of calls per day.
Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and others could shut this down if they wanted to.

set to only allow calls from contacts.
OregonBlue
(7,754 posts)keep using 541-483 numbers and some of them are people I have in my contacts. Most people don't realize their number is being used. We called the Oregon and Montana Attorney General's office and neither had any advice.

(18,869 posts)numbers. But when that didn't work I started getting multiple calls with other area codes and numbers.
