DU Album of the Day: Frank Zappa's "Hot Rats"

Well I decided a better way to pick Album of the Day is to take a look at this website - http://www.thisdayinmusic.com/

I figured I have so many fricking albums that one of them has to have a connection with something significant in music history.

And when I got to the birthday lists there it was - my Album of the Day.

71 years ago today Frank Vincent Zappa was born in Baltimore, MD.

Now I have to admit, I'm not the biggest Zappa fan, not that I have anything against his music but just never really listened to it. But having been a member of DU these past 10 years I've read more about Frank Zappa since he does seem to be a DU Lounge fan favorite. And about a year ago I found a copy of "Hot Rats" at the local Wilmington Library, so I borrowed and added it to my collection.

But I have to admit what I hear I really like since it's definately a unique sound but musically done very well.

So today, in memory of Frank Zappa, who would have been 71 years today, "Hot Rats" is the DU Album of the Day.

Enjoy!

Here's some comments I found from Wiki about "Hot Rats" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_Rats

* This is Frank Zappa's 2nd Solo album having been released in 1969
* Zappa described this album as a "Movie for your Ears*

I'll give a bonus cheer to anyone who can tell me who does the only vocals on the album (during 'Willie the Pimp')

It has "A 40 second thing in 39 seconds" which really lasts for 43 seconds.

a/k/a Captain Beefheart.

HR was the first Zappa album I ever bought, back in '72. Great stuff. I particularly like "Peaches en Regalia" though it's all top shelf.
