(13,599 posts)A "four fingered lid" if I remember right. That was supposed to be an ounce. Could have been the last "lid" ever sold as far as I know. It may have been a year or two before I bought another bag. By then it was always referred to as the hopefully actual weight.

(23,738 posts)During the 70's it came to be used regionally as representative of typical amounts people would buy. An oz, a half, etc, kind of like the notion of a 'dime bag'. It's just part of the private language between you and your dealer, lol.
The switch to 'actual weight' was one of the things that helped me learn the conversion between imperial and metric measuring systems.
