The stories of the 300 dogs of 911... Please take time to ponder their sacrifices too

Last edited Wed Sep 11, 2019, 03:58 PM - Edit history (1)

Many more on that twitter feed, but I thought I would note the following:

On edit: I posted a video of Bretagne, the oldest (then surviving) rescue dog on the occasion of her 16th birthday party and return to NYC to be celebrated in post #5 downstream. Sadly, she developed kidney failure a few months afterward and died in 2016. What a wonderful dog.

2. Thank you for honoring these brave dogs. Throughout history humanity's best friend has been

ever ready to sacrifice herself for her humans. She has served in war, in law enforcement, in search and rescue, in fire departments, and in the home protecting families, the elderly, and disabled. She has given unflagging support to human morale in all her many capacities.

We can all work, in our own way, towards better lives for our best friends. Foster, adopt, volunteer at a shelter, donate, be a part of the no-kill shelter movement, and educate others in their responsibilities to pets.

Again, thank you hlthe2b for bringing us this special and deserved tribute. May they Rest In Peace.

8. Wow great story!

Thanks for posting these pics and stories of the search-and-rescue dogs. I remember that dogs were used early on at Ground Zero, when they were still finding survivors in the rubble. Rescue dogs are trained to do amazing things, and some are just smart enough to catch on quickly.

Thanks for posting this!

9. Tears rolling down my face...

“We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate for having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein do we err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with the extension of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings: they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth.”
― Henry Beston

12. I am sitting in a deli crying.

A year after 9/11 I asked about where to find shirts that honored these dogs and I got told my many people I should be supporting the people not a dog. Is there such a thing as to early to want to recognize these brave dogs?

My heart and thanks goes to all of those hero dogs.

I never was able to find shirts recognizing these wonderful dogs.

17. It is sad to me that people make it an "either/or"... One can be sure these dogs don't do so.

I sincerely believe that those who do not have compassion for animals are incapable of showing full compassion for their fellow humans; conversely, those who love and appreciate animals are generally those you can most depend upon to help out their fellow human beings.

"I will be back for you." I don't think I could ever recover.

What did we ever do to deserve such faithful friends?
