I have the same model phone, also running Safari, and it's fine. Maybe its memory is used up. Have you tried a hard reboot?

How does one do the hard reboot you speak of?

This isn’t like a reset where I loose all my contacts and everything else is it?

After that the Apple logo will appear and the phone will reboot. You won't lose any data. I've done it a couple of times when my phone hung up and wouldn't respond.

According to this, what I described is a "soft reboot," and a true hard reboot will erase your data but you have to go through several deliberate steps to do it. It won't happen accidentally. https://www.ubergizmo.com/how-to/how-to-reset-the-iphone/
