I liked that song because its repetitiveness matched that of the desert. We spent time in the desert when I was a kid and the memories were happy. The song just seemed to fit. I'm surprised at myself because I usually have much less tolerance of repetition in other songs than do most people.

That said, what other songs could be a hit by the likes of both actor Richard Harris AND the late great Donna Summer?
Brother Buzz
(36,449 posts)That is, if he wasn't burning up the charts with other hit songs by his buddy, and fellow Wrecking Crew member, Jimmy Webb at the time.
And just so you know, the lyrics were anything but ridiculous to Webb; it was a song about a love affair that went south. Sappy, maybe, but not ridiculous to 22 year old Webb:
Everything in the song was visible. There's nothing in it that's fabricated. The old men playing checkers by the trees, the cake that was left out in the rain, all of the things that are talked about in the song are things I actually saw. And so it's a kind of musical collage of this whole love affair that kind of went down in MacArthur Park. ... Back then, I was kind of like an emotional machine, like whatever was going on inside me would bubble out of the piano and onto paper - Jimmy Webb
