Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI just incised and drained the largest sebaceous cyst I've ever seen!
It was HUGE!
I had to give the patient 8cc's of Xylocaine to numb up the site. When she was finally numb, one little poke with the blade, and a tidalwave of flocculent splooge spurted out. It took forever to get it all drained out.
Then I had to go in after the cyst capsule, to make sure the cyst wouldn't grow back. I yanked the whole thing out finally, and it looked like a tendon, it was so large.
Well, *dusts hands off* that's done. Packed the site and prescribed her something for when the local wears off.
Whew!
That was the most fun I've had in clinic in a couple of years!

(11 posts)The largest one is still in the air.

(21,847 posts)You and your patient should have made video of that for people who like that kind of stuff.
As for me, I'll pass. That stuff freaks me out.

(3,739 posts)a "granuloma" from my arm. He was so excited. He also kept going on about how much fun it was to do stuff like this. I'm a nervous nelly type and his attitude actually helped with my nervousness. I loved that doctor. I'll bet your patients love you too! So glad to hear you had a fun day at work!

(66,328 posts)She asked me if I was going to use a local anesthestic for the procedure.
I told her I usually just have Tiny and Crusher come in, hold her down, and muffle her screams.
She laughed nervously until I drew up the local.

(32,674 posts)Get infected fissures. Got one a few years ago so i stuck a syringe in it and drained it. Kind of hard to do when you can't see it. So I told my doc he flipped out and ask if it was painful I said hell yes. He said he was very proud of me.

However, If you need any math done or a thousand foot long tape of financial transactions audited, I'm the one to call.
What percentage of people would choose which?

(17,425 posts)I have to go in Wednesday to get a recurring cyst "laid open". The surgeon thinks he did not get the entire core during the first 2 surgeries. I'll ask him if there is any flocculent splooge coming out.

(33,516 posts)I was a big time pimple popper. I only had one sebaceous cyst removed in my life. The guy left a big scar on my chest after telling me he'd practice on me in case he ever had to do a girl's face.
Later he misdiagnosed my mother's brain tumor as the flu.
Then when I became I chemist; I learned what "splooge" was, but regrettably my acne cleared up and I couldn't do the analysis to prove it.
Cool stuff that "splooge." Lipids are a major deal; an under appreciated class of biomolecules.

(6,112 posts)The cyst was on my back. No Xylociane, but it didn't really hurt. The problem is, it grew back! Now I have to go back and hear all the "ughs" and "oohs" again.

It's not always easy to do, but getting it out substantially reduces the risk of recurrence.

(8,747 posts)I love this stuff. Love watching Dr. Sandra Lee aka Dr. Pimple Popper. She has done some major procedures and videos them.
I also like the one where normal pimples and comedones are being expressed, set to music.

(6,591 posts)And the worst wounds were the most satisfying ones. Not because they were gross but because I found it really interesting and the patients needed someone who wasn't squeamish about it.
Only caveat was when doing burns. Never ever got used to them.

(16,306 posts)They wouldn't do it until the infection was gone. I had to drain it every day while the antibiotics did their thing.
I think the derm may have been milking my insurance, they ordered a bunch of blood tests, culture, and biopsy.
The third visit where they actually removed it was 620 dollars.
Eta they didn't give me anything for pain, and I go back tomorrow to have the stitches removed.

(66,328 posts)Interesting, and a lot of fun.
As usual with any medical show, my wife gets irritated when I diagnose the patient before the TV doctor does.
I wish they'd get a few Physician Assistants on screen.
Royal Pains had a character who was a PA, but they ruined her character in the finale by portraying her as wanting to go to medical school to get an MD. I don't know any PA's who want that.
