It's almost all I have been thinking about for weeks!
I am 60 and maybe crazy to do this.

(24,128 posts)Them dogs'll run ya ragged! But hey, the love you get in return is soooo worth it. Again, congrats!

(11,109 posts)Love me some Wiemaraners. I'm envious - even if a tad older than you.

(11,109 posts)Makes me miss old Beau. Best lap dog ever born. Mind you, a lap-full but a great lap sitter.
Yeah.
Ferrets are Cool
(21,110 posts)I am happy for you. We are picking up 4 shelter ferrets in a couple of weeks. It keeps me from ever going on vacations, but you know what? It makes me happy to give them a forever home for the rest of their lives. It is all worth it and has been all 30+ times we have done it.
Enjoy your new friend.

(11,802 posts)I've been trying to talk my wife into getting a couple ferrets..... So far no go.
An ex drummer of mine had a couple. He lived in his grandparents basement. He had the whole basement set up for them. Numerous dryer vent tunnels. I loved those guys. They were awesome!
Ferrets are Cool
(21,110 posts)they are, however, pets that I would rather NOT see in pet stores like PetSmart. Too many times they are purchased as impulse buys and when they find out just how much care they require, they are tossed away like yesterdays newspaper. It's one reason we have had over 30 of them over the 18 years that my wife and I have been together.
Sounds like your drummer knew what they needed....lots of room and lots of toys. Cats have NOTHING on a ferrets curiosity. They are the most curious animals I've ever seen.
And yes, they do have that "ferret smell". It's something I got used to years ago. We keep special air filters in the ferret room just for this.

(5,210 posts)Enjoy him or her. I'm envious. I'm a little older than you (10 years) and not in good enough physical shape to take care of a dog. So enjoy him/her all the more for me.

(24,128 posts)hence last pup, etc.. My back is fried, and I'm hoping this will help.

(24,128 posts)He's looking burly at this point. hahaha This puppy, Kaspar, just keeps growing, according to the pics I've seen from the breeder. I must be crazy, but I'm determined. I don't think I've been without a dog around for close to 30 years.

(3,619 posts)puppies grow so quickly. Our standard poodle turned 2 this week, and I'm 66. Why would I want to miss out on the joy of having a dog?
It isn't my first Weim. They are very energetic.

(24,128 posts)It is not my first Weim, and I have had kennel/shelter/rescue dogs before. For my last pup, I am going for a young one one from a breeder. I am 60 but still working a lot and cannot deal with issues the dog has had in the past. I have had time to do that with previous dogs but don't have that time now. I will have to train him at his very young age and socialize the heck out of him.
I don't want to be dragged around by this wonderful creature on a leash or have to chase him around the NM mountains, so I will have to train him early. Monday cannot come soon enough.

(54,770 posts)I will pick him up from a northern NM breeder on Monday, who I suspect is a libertarian. Nice guy born and raised in that area, living in beautiful country.

(16,386 posts)Congratulations. Someone told me once that they were prone to bloat due to their deep chests. Don't know if it's true, though. Post photos when you get him home---PLEEEZE!

(24,128 posts)I have to store them on another site somewhere. But rest assured, this little guy is just as cute as any posted online. He is classic. His name is Kaspar. I will bring him home on Monday!
