Ever read any of the Roy Blakeley books? This was a series written in the 20s by Percy Kees Fitzhugh

My dad (1908-1995) introduced my brothers and me to the series about a boy, his Boy Scout troop, and their adventures.

The book he still had from his childhood - and the 1st one we read - was Roy Blakeley and the Beeline Hike. Roy and some friends start out on a hike at camp and have to proceed on a straight line, no matter what - climb the tree they come to, swim the river, etc. They must never detour.

We kids found the books very funny. Later I found more of the series as well as books in the companion series about Pee Wee Harris and Tom Slade.

The Tom Slade books are darker. Un like Roy and Pee Wee, Tom is from a 'lower class' family and had a bad childhood. Some of the books deal with his adventures as a young soldier in WWI.

Many of Fitzhugh's books from the 3 series are free online at the Gutenberg Project.

Any Marjorie Maynard books? My Mom (1913-2005) had some of those. She gave them to me in the 50s. bobbieinok Feb 2018 #2

back in the 60s: my uncle used to by lots at estate sales and gave me a lot of the children's books he got. Had some ancient Bobbsey Twins as well, and various other girl sleuth novels long forgotten.
