The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsFor those who did watch the Super Bowl, what did you think of the ads?
This is the first Super Bowl in *YEARS* where I have not really seen any ads that really stood out. But I do have a best ad and a worst ad.
Best ad - T-Mobile ad about equality. Wow, that was awesome. And I'm sure that it will piss off more than a few Trump fans. I can hear them throwing their remotes at the TV, if they watched at all.
Worst ad - Honda. WTF was that commercial? They wanted you to find something hidden in the background, but I was too busy being creeped out by the extremely creepy looking guy in the foreground to notice anything happening in the background. Bad commercial.
Your thoughts? No haters please.

(907 posts)But I smiled at the football players dancing to time of my life. kinda a uplift to mostly dull commercials I was hoping for more that had meaning like last year then the few they did

(7,681 posts)It was a great game, but that ad made me throw up in my mouth a little. That ad made me think that it was catering to the Ram buyer who wants to think he isn't really a racist just because he always votes Republican and has a Blue Lives Matter bumper sticker.

(61,721 posts)It's one thing for Geico to portray Washington Crossing the Delaware Turnpike. But MLK's words were crassly misapplied at the end. All of those people shown were in service to others. The truck, any brand, cannot compare.

I'm still a little pissed that they took out Aaron Rodgers. This season would have had a whole different ending if he hadn't been injured . . .

(5,547 posts)Regardless of the winners and losers, I was struck at how many brands wanted to position themselves on the right side of the culture wars.
Some were great Mass Mutual (full disclosure it featured my daughters school)
Some were misguided. MLK selling Dodge Ram trucks is wrong on so many levels. But just stop for a minute and think about where we are when a tough-guy all-american truck company wants to align themselves with MLK. Even though it was a bad idea, I am heartened that they thought that was the right positioning for them.
It is pretty clearly a backlash to trumpism
