Pope "Benny the Rat" Rattzinger sees the handwriting on the wall. The Vatican loses its ridiculous statehood, the archives open up, and we see Benny and his thugs have been protecting thousands and thousands of pedo priests, at the expense of tens of thousands of innocent victims. And before y'all flame me about criticizing "the church", I know an organization as big as the RCC is going to have some bad apples. The sin is the shameful cover-up and horrible toll on the victims. Church leaders knew these priests were sexually abusing kids and they obstructed any investigation. If you and/or I know a kid is being abused and do nothing, we commit a crime. So does "the church."

...unfortunately, "deal with" meant moving predator, pedophile priests from diocese-to-diocese and parish-to-parish to avoid detection and prosecution. "Deal with" did NOT mean identifying the perps, defrocking them and then handing them over to authorities for prosecution. At THE HIGHEST LEVELS of the Cathlic Church, it was thought that silence was the best policity, even if it meant that known pedophile pedator priests would abuse again and again.

Popes don't quit because they are physically or mentally unfit. Either they die, other people speak for them, or they get bumped off.

but yeah, doesn't this just prove that God got it wrong this time? He didn't pick someone who could last out his full term.

I mean, from what I understand, the pope has an exclusive personal intercom system set up with the Lord Almighty doesn't he? Isn't he supposed to tough it out or make God look bad?

The Cardinals (not the St. Louis Cardinals btw) can elect anybody they want. He just has to be a baptized Catholic, male, and never have been convicted or plausibly accused of heresy. They can take Sam Burd, the garage mechanic if they want.

Rather old for changing religions, but there it is and he's a lot younger than any of those Cardinals.

Thing I wonder about, if anyone knows, is that there was supposed to a famous prophecy that said that this going to be was the LAST Pope, period.

Which was odd, but it was pushed about for a while on the internet. Not being a Catholic, I don't know who, if anyone took it seriously. It appears to be wrong.

I didn't expect this to happen, but did notice on another thread that there have been Pope who left before death. So it's not like it never happened before.

And he does look sickly. Doubt he's going to be among the living much longer.

It's your choice to believe in hell.

I don't personally know anyone who actually lives as though hell is real, and to be avoided at all costs.

Hell is the same kind of human construct as unicorns, the easter bunny, the tooth fairy and barney.

Will it make the Nun's lives easier or harder? Maybe he'll bring his own cook, or maybe he'll sit there with his steak and eggs while they chew their gruel.

Wouldn't put it past him.

He realizes he is too frail to drag the church further to the right and to continue to cover-up the church's involvement in the mass abuse of young boys and girls, so this is his next game.

He is going to be sure he installs his preferred right-wing candidate as pope before he goes off to la-la land. What a sorry excuse for a church leader.

I have nothing against him resigning when he can no longer fulfill his responsibilities. I wish some of our Congress critters and the likes of Queen Liz accept the appropriateness of leaving before you have no business remaining. I think Liz still has all her faculties and is still able to "rule" but I feel for her as her husband ages and attending to him should be more important than her reign.

But "Ratz"inger should never have been pope given his close ties to the abuse coverups. I only hope the cardinals can break free and elect someone from a different continent and different generation. I still think Ratty has fixed the game and already has a similar hard right candidate pre-selected to fill his slippers. I hope I am wrong.
