(5,937 posts)Aside from "don't murder" and "don't steal" (and perhaps false witness), the ten commandments violate our constitution, particularly freedom of speech. That's in addition to the constitutional separations of church and state.
1. Have no other gods before me -- particular to Christianity, unconstitutional
2. Do not make idols -- ditto
3. Do not take the name of the Lord in vain -- ditto
4. Do not work on Sunday -- ditto
5. Honor your Father and Mother -- A popular but not universal opinion
6. Don't murder -- there's a secular law against that
7. Do not commit adultery -- Popular but not universal opinion
8. Do not steal -- there's a secular law against that
9. Do not lie -- Popular but far from universal opinion
10. Do not covet -- Probably good advice, but not a universal opinion
So of the ten commandments, only two warn against actual illegal acts, four belong in an advice column, and the remaining (and FIRST) four only belong on the wall of a Christian church.
